Parotidectomy is a surgery to remove the parotid gland. It is used to treat the tumors on parotid glands. This surgery is performed under general anesthesia and requires an expert for greater precision as the facial nerve is nearby the parotid gland. Parotidectomy is carried out by making an incision to remove the tumor. The incision is made at the front of the ear that extends to the line down the neck, under and along the jawline. It involves the removal of the tumor along with some healthy tissue around it without causing any damage to the facial nerve. Parotidectomy is a complex surgery and it can last from 2 to 5 hours based on the type of surgery performed and surgical techniques used.
A surgery to remove the submandibular gland, one of the three paired salivary glands. It is used to treat recurrent infections in the salivary glands, salivary duct stones, and salivary gland tumors. Submandibular gland excision is done under general anesthesia. The surgery involves making a 2-inch incision in the upper part of the neck, just below the jawline. Once the submandibular gland is removed, the incision is held together with stitches, which are usually removed around a week after the surgery.
